A trove of condemnations continue to trail Biden, the US President’s endorsement of Mr. Bola Ahmed Tinubu following his pyrrhic victory at the 2023 Presidential elections in Nigeria.
Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a US convicted drug criminal who pleaded guilty to significant involvement in white heroin trafficking, was announced president-elect of Africa’s most populous nation in the aftermath of a Feb 25th poll process replete with violence, rigging, and technical disruptions as reported by U.S election observers.
Several voices of reason within the US Congress and across Africa, draw parallels on the hypocrisy of the State Department towards Nigeria—as compared to its reactions during the last Kenyan elections—given the ongoing legal challenge surrounding election credibility, which remains unresolved to date.
In the case of Kenya, Biden had held back congratulations for over four weeks till all litigation surrounding William Ruto and Raila Odinga was resolved.
Unsurprisingly, the rigging and technical inconsistencies of the just concluded elections closely mimic the 2020 US Presidential polls which brought Joe Biden to power. Reports of vote buying, mail-in ballot scandals, secret vote tallying, and figure manipulations, highlighted the electoral process that saw Joe Biden upturn Trump’s lead in the dead of the night after a sudden and unexplained “electoral recess.”
Several months after and the Biden family still draws many raised eyebrows following the corrupt dealings of Hunter Biden in Ukraine and China.
These similarities between both leaders, now made obvious by Biden’s congratulatory message to a drug felon, puts the question of corruption, character, and integrity at the forefront of both the US and Nigeria.
Perhaps a recalibration of moral compass is long overdue for the man at the White House.
